Professional bicycling encompasses countless forms of competitions. It comprises the road bicycle racing, the mountain bike racing, the cyclo-cross competition, the track racing, the bike trials and cycle speedway and the BMX racing.
The first known professional bicycling race was a 1,200-meter race that was held at Parc de Saint-Cloud Paris last May 31, 1868. The migr Englishman James Moore won this competition with his iron -tired wooden bicycle. This bicycle is now displayed at the National Museum in Cambridgeshire, England.
Professional road bicycle races on the other hand are usually held from spring to fall. Riders from the northern hemisphere usually stay in countries like Australia to train or to compete during these seasons. Ranges of these tour races vary from single day competitions to multi-day competitions. Single day cycling events mostly consist of the “Classics” competitions like the “Milan-Sanremo” and the “Ronde van Vlaanderen.” The multi-day events are usually “Grand Tour” races that lasts for several days like the “Vuelta a Espaa” and the “Tour de France.”
USA Cycling’s longest professional one-day race was endorsed is the “Lotoja.” This competition crossed 206 miles of track from Logan, Utah going to and across Jackson, Wyoming. Meanwhile, “Criteriums” remain the most popular form of professional bicycle racing in the North America. In Belgium, “Kermesses” stays popular with one day events of about 120 kilometers or more per track. Road races and time trial events have also been popularized in these places
Another type of professional cycling event is the Cyclo-cross. This sport emerged as a sport during off seasons to change their form of training during cold seasons. Cyclo-cross is typically held during the autumns and winter like the International or World Cup competitions that are held usually from September to January. This type of race consists either 2-3 kilometer or 1-2 mile laps and its course usually features wooden trails, pavement, steep hills, grass and even obstacles that require cyclists to dismount, carry and remount their bicycles. Meanwhile, senior citizens’ Cyclo-cross usually last from 30 minutes to an hour and the distance varies according to the conditions.
Professional mountain bicycling is definitely a new racing event. It was popularized during the 1990s. This bicycling event usually hosts races off the road, involves moderate level of technical riding and wide knobby tires equipped with deep tread. There are several types of Mountain bicycling; and the main categories of such event are the cross-country, the downhill and four-cross racing.
Professional Track cycling on the other hand encompasses races that are usually held at velodromes or banked tracks. These events are quite diverse and usually range two-man sprints and individual and team pursuits to different group and mass races. Competitors of this race are frequently not equipped with freewheels or brakes.
These Professional bicycle races are popular around the globe most especially in countries like Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Thus, the Professional bicycling stands as the first popular hallmark of Professional Vehicle Racing in the history of sports.
