Wash your hands before eating. Brush your teeth before bed. Eat your vegetables. These are the oh-so-familiar words of most mothers across America. As children, we often come to dread the nagging orders and suggestions of our mothers. In any case of how lenient or strict they may be, they seem to be constantly telling us what to do (and along the same lines and usually more often, what not to do). When coupled with childhood curiosity, youthful rebellion and adult self-confidence, such an overload of information and information may lead us to simply block out all of the noise.
But while tuning out our mothers´ advice may be tempting, it is not advisable. Their way of transmitting information to us may be a bit imperious and even sometimes unwelcome. Though the medium of the message may be questionable, the message itself is often some pretty sound advice. We must admit that a excellent amount of the time, they are right.
In fact, there are some pieces of motherly advice given in childhood that are so right on that they apply right through oneâs entire life, from youth to adulthood. Here are three things our mothers told us that will apply right through our lives:
1. Better to be safe than sorry.
This one tells us to take precaution, to be careful, to reckon before acting and when acting, to err on the side of caution. When we are small, this means wearing a helmet while riding our bicycles, thinking twice before climbing to the top of a tree and double-knotting our shoes. As adults, this means still wearing a helmet while riding our bicycles, throwing out amusing-smelling milk and double-checking the locks on our doors and windows.
This piece of advice mainly applies to the issue of home security, which is very concentrated in precaution and prevention. We invest in home security and home alarm systems, install smoke detectors and devise escape plans all in the name of being safe (and not sorry).
2. Watch out for strangers.
This is a refrain our mothers used to scare the bejeezus out of us when we were small, keeping us out of the cars of weird men offering candy and away from weird women searching for their puppies. Though the days of such threats are long gone, the substance of the message shouldnât be lost. We must be careful not to trust those we donât know, in any case of how nice or harmless they may seem. This is something Momâs been telling us from the start.
3. Look both ways before crossing.
In adulthood, this one doesnât apply just to the street (though looking for cars before crossing is a precaution that must always be taken). It serves as a daily reminder to be aware of our surroundings â something the chaos and rush of adult life doesnât always allow us to do.
As much as we despise to admit it, our mothers knew what they were talking about while guiding us through the hurdles of childhood. What they may not have realized, but, is how right they were, for that guidance is something that stays with us right through all of our lives.
Our mothers know what they’re talking about when it comes to home security systems, and where they fall small, the experts at ADT can help fill in the gaps.
